The Top 20 Women in Dallas Advertising - 2020 Shining Stars Class Announced

The wait is over. We're sorry for the delay! AAF Dallas is excited to announce who the top 20 women in Dallas advertising are!

AAF Dallas is celebrating the 4th annual Shining Stars awards program which honors top women in Dallas advertising. In 2017, we launched our AAF Dallas Shining Stars program to celebrate amazing women doing amazing things in Dallas advertising. Inspired after attending the Southwest Advertising Hall of Fame event, we googled “top women in Dallas advertising” and the result was “The 10 Most Beautiful Women in Dallas” instead of finding women who are producing thought-provoking and innovative work, breaking through barriers to create something new, or forging partnerships that drive growth. We believe ambition, work ethic, creativity, and leadership are qualities to celebrate and elevate. We believe when you get 25 incredible women in a room, great things happen. We believe it’s time that the nation recognizes our city as the talented advertising market that we are…and so the AAF Dallas Shining Star program lives on. See last year's group here

Your health and safety is important to us, we are currently postponing the Shining Stars event to Thursday, September 3. We have been working closely with the venue to ensure our guests safety is a top priorty. Currently (6/15/20) there is a limited number of tables of SIX(6 attendees) only with SIX(6) feet apart from each table. We WILL be requiring masks for all attendees (with medical exceptions) for this event. The venue has also increased sanitation and have committed to single use serving dishes. We will be serving plated dinners this year in lieu of action stations. Gloves and masks will be worn by all staff, but also available to guests if requested. Additionally, we will have a medical professional at the door checking temperatures. This event will only go if it is safe to do so. In the event that it is postponed again, we will let our Shining Stars and attendees know.

Dress code is semi-formal. Table reservations will begin on June 15, 2020. This event will have very limited capacity this year and has consistently sold out in years past. Therefore are no individual ticket sales at this time. We are currently only booking tables for our honorees and their companies at this time!  Please register for our mailing list if you would like to be notified if individual tickets go on sale. In the mean time, one way to show support for your favorite Shining Star is to takeout an ad in this year's book. For information about tables reservations reach out to Allison McCaslin at [email protected]

We’re thrilled to announce the fourth class of AAF Dallas Shining Stars. These women are Community Leaders, C-Suite Executives, Co-Founders, Executive VPs, Strategic Masterminds, Media Mavens, and more. They are breaking glass ceilings and elevating the Dallas advertising community to heights we have never seen before! Congratulations!

COVID-19

Hello,

Over the past few weeks all of our worlds were turned upside down after COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic. As this continued to unfold, it became apparent that we would not be able to conduct business as usual in regards to our luncheon programming and talent recognition programs like Shining Stars through the rest of our fiscal year. Since 1908, AAF Dallas has been bringing the industry together through our many events and initiatives to make our industry a better place to work and the world a better place to live in. We have been working diligently behind the scenes to ensure we can still do this in these unprecedented times.

Here's how we are responding to the COVID-19 Pandemic:

  • SHINING STARS NOMINATIONS: We are extending the 2020 Shining Stars Nomination Process until May 1. We are going to see so many amazing rockstars shine during this unprecedented time. It is completely free to nominate some and to let them know you think they are worthy of being recognized for the contributions to your team and the Dallas advertising industry. Nominate your star here!
  • SHINING STARS GALA: We have postponed the 4th annual Shining Stars Gala until September 3, 2020.
  • CANCELLED MEETINGS: We are cancelling all in-person meetings and events for Ad 2 Dallas and AAF Dallas through June 2020.
  • RECRUITING FOR THE BOARD: We are looking for our new 2020-2021 board of directors. This is a great way to give back to our community. Please reach out to Allison ([email protected]) or Jorge ([email protected]) if you have any questions about volunteering.  Learn more information about which roles we are filling here.
  • CONNECTING PEOPLE: We are making our job board completely free of charge for anyone in the advertising industry who is looking for a job or candidate. If you have been impacted by layoffs, please consider advertising yourself and your resume on our job board.
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: We are actively looking for experts who would be interested in leading webinars over the next few months to provide our members with free content. Email [email protected] if you are interested in sharing your knowledge.
  • GIVING BACK: We are looking for advertising professionals of all flavors to join our adhoc committee to create PSAs for our city to use. Contact [email protected] if you are in creative, production, project management, or media. We need a few people from each discipline to pull this off.
  • SHELTERING IN PLACE: We are conducting all meetings over the phone or via UberConference to ensure the health and safety of our board members.
  • HERE TO LISTEN: Please reach out to us if you need support from AAF Dallas. As you all know this is evolving and we are looking to jump in where we can.

With all this being said, we miss you! During this time, we hope you remember how important our industry is during all of this. We are storytellers who have the unique opportunity to help our clients keep their doors open and create meaningful messaging to our country during times of fear and uncertainty. We have the power to spread hope and humanity. We hope you take this opportunity to make the world a better place through your work and actions. Let us know what we can do to help you.

Thank you,

Farhan Rehmani, AAF Dallas President

2020 GOVERNOR’S AWARD ANNOUNCED

2020 Governor’s Award Announced

The Southwest Advertising Hall of Fame is proud to announce that the recipient of this year’s “Governor’s Award” is the independent idea shop called WALO Creative Inc. WALO is based in Dallas Texas.

The Southwest Advertising Hall of Fame is sponsored by the Tenth District of the American Advertising Federation (AAF), encompassing Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. The “Governor’s Award” will be presented at the ceremonial Hall of Fame induction dinner to be held in Austin on Friday, May 8, 2020.

WALO was founded in August 2014 by Walter Barraza and Lalo Durán. They believe “concept is king and develop every idea with the highest production value in mind, so your brand stands above your competitor’s.” Some of their clients include Jarritos, 7-Eleven, MCFA and Mineragua.

Fleeing a civil-war-torn country in Central America brought Barraza, WALO’s Co-Founder and Executive Creative Director, and his family to Dallas.  Living in the U.S. enabled him to become a sponge for all cultures. Speaking Spanish at home and English in school with friends that were Latino, American, African-American and Asian allowed him to develop a unique perspective on Life.  That perspective has molded his work and keeps it evolving.

Raised on one of the busiest USA-Mexican borders, Durán, WALO’s Co-Founder and Managing Partner, grew up living in two worlds, which allowed him to witness how the convergence of cultures is shaping this country. That has given him a unique perspective that he truly enjoys showcasing in his work, and this has also broadened his perspective when tackling his clients’ marketing challenges.

The AAF Tenth District’s Southwest Advertising Hall of Fame “Governor’s Award” is presented to the advertising agency who, during its years of service, has distinguished itself through work produced on behalf of clients, who has contributed to the betterment of advertising and its reputation, and who has made volunteer efforts outside the workplace. Previous winners include GSD&M, Lopez Negrete Communications, Moroch and the Balcom Agency.

The honoree’s record of service reflects accomplishments made in the advertising industry in the United States and who is located in the four-state area of the Tenth District (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas).
